Türkiye travel tips: what to know before you go

Visa and entry

Maldivian ordinary passport holders require a visa to enter Türkiye. Eligible ordinary passport holders can apply for a multiple-entry e-Visa through the official Turkish e-Visa system. Maldivian official passport holders are exempt from a visa for stays of up to 30 days. Your passport should generally be valid for at least six months from your date of arrival.

Always check the official Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs website before travelling, as visa requirements can change.

Getting around

Türkiye has an extensive public transport network, particularly in Istanbul.

• Istanbul: Metro, tram, buses, ferries and metrobuses make it easy to move around the city.

• Istanbulkart: Useful for public transport and can be used across the city's metro, buses, trams, ferries and other transport services. The Istanbulkart Mobile app also supports QR-code payments for public transport.

• Taxis: Use registered taxis or reputable app-based/pre-booked services. Avoid accepting rides from unofficial taxi drivers.

• Intercity travel: Domestic flights, high-speed trains and long-distance buses connect major cities.

Food

Türkiye is a great destination for food lovers, and halal food is widely available.

Although pork is not commonly used in traditional Turkish cuisine, if you require strictly halal food, look for restaurants that specifically identify themselves as halal or ask before ordering.

Money

The local currency is the Turkish lira (TRY/₺).

Cards are widely accepted in hotels, shopping centres, restaurants and many businesses, but it is still useful to carry some Turkish lira for smaller shops, markets, taxis and other cash-only situations.

Keep an eye on exchange rates when changing money and use established banks or authorised exchange offices.

A few rules and customs to know

Türkiye is a predominantly Muslim country, but it is also culturally diverse and relatively relaxed in major tourist areas.

• Dress modestly when visiting mosques and religious sites.

• Remove your shoes before entering a mosque.

• Women may be asked to cover their heads when entering some mosques; carrying a light scarf can be useful.

• Avoid photographing people, particularly in religious settings, without permission.

• Be respectful during prayer times and religious ceremonies.

• Public displays of affection should be kept relatively discreet.

• Bargaining is common in some markets, but generally not in established shops or shopping centres.

Stay aware

Türkiye is generally well set up for tourists, but visitors should remain aware of their surroundings, particularly in busy tourist areas.

Pickpocketing can occur in crowded areas of Istanbul, so keep your phone, passport and wallet secure.

• Language: Turkish; English is commonly understood in major tourist areas.

• Time: Türkiye is UTC+3. Maldives is UTC+5, so Türkiye is 2 hours behind Maldives.

• Electricity: 230V, 50Hz; Type C and Type F plugs are commonly used. A universal travel adapter is useful.

• Tipping: A tip of around 5–10% is commonly appreciated in restaurants and cafés when service is not already included.

• Mosques: Visitors are welcome, but modest clothing and appropriate behaviour are expected.

• Passport: Keep your passport safely stored and carry a copy or digital copy when appropriate.

• Emergency: 112 for police, ambulance and fire.

• Visa: Check the current requirements before travelling, particularly if travelling on an ordinary Maldivian passport.
