Thailand travel tips: what to know before you go

What Maldivian travellers should know before heading to Thailand — staying online, getting around Bangkok, halal food, and the local rules worth knowing.

Thailand travel tips: what to know before you go

Thailand is a top choice for a holiday, with great food, easy transport and islands to match. Here's what to know before you fly.

Stay connected

Install your eSIM before you leave and turn it on when you land, so you can book a ride the moment you're out of the airport. Browse Roam Dhuniye's Thailand eSIM plans, and see our installation guide if you need it.

Getting around

  • In Bangkok, the BTS Skytrain and MRT beat the traffic.
  • Ride-hailing apps such as Grab and Bolt show the fare up front.
  • For a tuk-tuk, agree the price before you get in.
  • Traffic drives on the left.

Food

Halal food is easy to find in Bangkok and across the south, including Phuket and Krabi — look for the halal sign. Pork is common in Thai cooking, so ask when you're unsure. Don't drink the tap water; buy bottled water.

Etiquette and rules

  • Don't touch people's heads, and don't point your feet at people or Buddha images.

  • Speak respectfully about the royal family — it's a serious legal matter in Thailand.

  • E-cigarettes and vapes are banned. Leave them at home.

Good to know

  • Currency: Thai baht (THB). Keep some cash for markets and street food.
  • Power: 220V. Many sockets take both flat and round pins, but an adapter is still handy.
  • Entry rules change, so check the official Thai immigration website before you book.
