Sri Lanka travel tips: what to know before you go
A short, practical guide for Maldivian travellers heading to Sri Lanka — staying connected, getting around, halal food and temple etiquette.

Sri Lanka is one of the closest and most popular getaways from the Maldives. A little preparation makes the trip smoother.
Stay connected
Install your eSIM before you fly, while you still have Wi-Fi, then switch it on when you land. That way you have maps and ride apps working the moment you leave the airport. See Roam Dhuniye's Sri Lanka eSIM plans, and our installation guide if it's your first eSIM.
Getting around
Colombo has ride-hailing apps such as Uber and PickMe, which show the fare up front.
For a tuk-tuk, agree the price before you get in.
Traffic drives on the left.
The scenic train rides, like Kandy to Ella, are popular — reserve seats early.
Food
Halal food is easy to find in Colombo and other big towns. If you're unsure, just ask. Rice and curry is the everyday meal, and it's usually very spicy — say so if you'd like it milder.
Etiquette
Never pose for a photo with your back to a Buddha statue.
Dress modestly away from the beach.
