Singapore is clean, safe and very easy to get around, which makes it a good first international city trip. A few things are worth knowing in advance.
Stay connected
Install your eSIM before you fly and switch it on when you land, so maps and ride apps work as soon as you clear the airport. Browse RoamDhuniye's Singapore eSIM plans, and see our installation guide if you need it.
Getting around
- The MRT is fast and covers most places visitors go. You can tap in and out with a contactless bank card or phone on trains and buses.
- Taxis and ride-hailing apps such as Grab are widely available.
- Traffic drives on the left.
Food
Hawker centres are the heart of Singapore's food scene, with good meals at low prices. Halal options are common — look for the halal certificate from MUIS (the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore) on the stall or restaurant.
Rules to know
Singapore enforces its laws strictly, and fines are heavy.
- Don't litter, including cigarette butts.
- Vapes and e-cigarettes are illegal — don't bring them.
- The sale of chewing gum is banned.
- Eating and drinking are not allowed on the MRT.
- Cross at marked crossings.
Good to know
- Currency: Singapore dollar (SGD). Cards and phone payments are accepted almost everywhere.
- Power: 230V, with three-pin (UK-style) sockets — bring an adapter.
- Tipping isn't expected; a service charge is usually included.
- Entry rules change, so check the official Singapore immigration website before you book.
