Malaysia travel tips: what to know before you go

A practical guide for Maldivian travellers to Malaysia — getting online, getting around Kuala Lumpur, halal food, and mosque and prayer facilities.

Malaysia travel tips: what to know before you go

Malaysia is a comfortable, affordable destination, and a familiar one for many Maldivians thanks to the food and the ease of getting around.

Stay connected

Install your eSIM before you fly and switch it on after landing so your maps and ride apps are ready immediately. See RoamDhuniye's Malaysia eSIM plans, and our installation guide if you need it.

Getting around

  • In Kuala Lumpur, the LRT, MRT and monorail cover most of the main areas.
  • Grab is the go-to ride-hailing app, with the fare shown before you book.
  • Traffic drives on the left.
  • It often rains in the afternoon, so keep a small umbrella handy.

Food

Malaysia is very easy for Muslim travellers, with halal food everywhere. Restaurants usually display a halal certificate or sign — check it if you're eating somewhere you don't know, especially at Chinese and other non-Malay eateries. Try nasi lemak, roti canai and satay.

Prayer and mosques

Malls, airports and stations usually have a prayer room (surau). Many major mosques welcome visitors outside prayer times and offer robes to borrow if you're not dressed modestly.

Etiquette

  • Take off your shoes before entering homes and places of worship.
  • Use your right hand to eat and to give or receive things.
  • Dress modestly at religious sites.

Good to know

  • Currency: Malaysian ringgit (MYR). Cards are widely accepted in cities.
  • Power: 240V, with three-pin (UK-style) sockets — bring an adapter.
  • Entry rules change, so check the official Malaysian immigration website before you book.
