India travel tips: what to know before you go
Practical tips for Maldivians travelling to India — mobile data, getting around, finding halal and vegetarian food, and everyday etiquette.

India is huge and varied, and it's a favourite for shopping, healthcare and holidays. These basics help on any trip.
Stay connected
Set up your eSIM before you leave and switch it on after landing, so maps and cab apps work straight away. Have a look at Roam Dhuniye's India eSIM plans, and our installation guide if you need it.
Getting around
- Ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Ola work in most big cities.
- At airports and stations, use the official prepaid taxi counters, or agree the fare or use the meter before you start.
- Metros in cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru are quick and cheap.
- Distances are big. Trains are a comfortable way to cover long routes — book early.
- Traffic drives on the left.
Food
Halal restaurants are common in many cities, so look for the halal sign. Many places are strictly vegetarian, which is useful to know when planning meals. Stick to bottled or filtered water.
Etiquette
- Take off your shoes before entering temples, mosques and many homes.
- Dress modestly, particularly at religious sites.
- Eat and pass things with your right hand.
- Bargaining is normal in markets, but not in shops with fixed prices.
Good to know
- Currency: Indian rupee (INR). Carry some cash — small vendors may not take cards.
- Power: 230V, with round-pin sockets — bring a universal adapter.
- Entry rules change, so check the official Indian visa website before you book.
